New Way Of Baking With the Introduction of SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking

Combining the unique properties of SPLENDA(reg) Sucralose with pure sugar, SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking is a first of its kind innovation in the U.S. Sweetener Category

Fort Washington, PA (June 24, 2004) - McNeil Nutritionals, a division of McNeil-PPC, Inc., which dramatically changed the sweetener category with the introduction three years ago of SPLENDA(reg) No Calorie Sweetener is doing it again by introducing a brand new product, SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking. SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking is the only blend of pure sugar and SPLENDA(reg) Brand Sweetener, which is made from sugar so it tastes like sugar. For the first time, consumers will be able to experience the taste and benefits of sugar when baking at home while cutting sugar in half.

"With the success of SPLENDA(reg) No Calorie Sweetener as the nation's number one branded retail sweetener, we have seen that Americans are not willing to compromise on taste when looking for healthier solutions," said Colin Watts, president, McNeil Nutritionals. "We created SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking to offer a true sugar baking replacement option for the growing consumer demand - over 66 percent of consumers would purchase SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking instead of sugar."

SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking is an ideal solution for families looking to make a positive change in their diet without compromising on taste, even for use in special occasion recipes. Consumers can simply substitute half a cup of SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking for every full cup of sugar required in a recipe and still experience the same amount of sweetness and the baking qualities of a full sugar recipe.

"With over 80 percent of consumers telling us they would use SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking on all or most baking occasions,* we see this product really changing the way people think about sugar," added Watts.

"My restaurant is a great place for me to understand the changing eating habits of Americans and their families, and I have found that a lot of people are interested in reducing their sugar intake but not willing to sacrifice on taste," said Chef Bill Yosses, pastry chef at Joseph's and at Citarella Gourmet Markets in New York. "SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking is a first of its kind innovation that has enabled me to discover a whole new way of baking."

"Baking is such an enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially if you do it as a family, and SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking makes it possible to include everyone in the fun," added Chef Yosses. "With SPLENDA(reg) Sugar Blend for Baking, I can create sweet and delicious homemade desserts that have half the sugar. This new product takes the guesswork out of blending sweeteners, making it easier to achieve great results. Everyone who likes quality, freshly baked desserts now has a viable alternative to sugar."

Is too much soy bad for men?

While soy may be beneficial to women in a variety of ways, research in monkeys suggests that it could have an adverse effect on the behavior of men, according to researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Reporting in the current issue of the scientific journal Hormones and Behavior, the researchers found that in male monkeys, "long-term consumption of a diet rich in soy isoflavones can have marked influences on patterns of aggression and social behavior." Isoflavones are a naturally occurring plant estrogen in soy protein. "Although considerable attention has been directed at the potentially beneficial effects of isoflavones in reducing the risk of various cancers, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and postmenopausal symptoms, less effort has been invested in characterizing neurobehavioral effects," according to the study.

Grapefruit and weight loss

The grapefruit diet is not a myth. That's what a new study by the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic confirmed. Researchers there found that the simple act of adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to one's diet can result in weight loss. The 12-week pilot study, led by Dr. Ken Fujioka, monitored weight and metabolic factors, such as insulin secretion, of the 100 men and women who participated in the Scripps Clinic 'Grapefruit Diet' study. On average, participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds, while those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. However, many patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds.
